Surgery

We have sterile operating theatres at all our sites. At Priory Vets we pride ourselves on the level of surgery we perform every day. This ranges from small lump removals and neutering, to emergency and advanced techniques, such as bowel resection..

Routine procedures take place Monday to Friday with admission appointments usually between 8:30am and 9am. Most patients are able to return home the same day. We strongly recommend the use of pre-operative blood testing to help minimise risks associated with anaesthesia and surgery.

We use up-to-date anaesthetics, and all patients are given appropriate drugs to control pain. To make anaesthesia as safe as possible, all patients are monitored individually by a veterinary nurse, using multi-parameter electronic equipment.

In many cases, sutures are buried underneath the skin thus avoiding suture removal and pets chewing out their stitches. Patients can be prescribed further pain relieving medications to take at home where necessary. Most pets are re-examined by a vet or nurse 3-5 days after an operation.

Hospitalisation

We have kennel wards at all of our branches, however, those patients requiring overnight care are admitted to our Bridlington Practice. Here facilities include a separate isolation ward, a secure outdoor dog yard for exercise and toileting and in house laboratory. This allows us to make rapid diagnoses and to monitor your pet’s recovery without having to wait for results from an external laboratory.

Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging is very important for our diagnosis and treatment of your pet.

We have digital radiography at all three sites, which allows us to take high resolution x-ray that evaluate a wide range of problems, from broken bones to bladder stones, heart disease and intestinal obstruction. We also have dental X-Ray facilities at our Bridlington Practice. As two thirds off the tooth lies blow the gum line this is invaluable in assessing the teeth and planning the best treatment.

We also now have ultrasound scanners at all of our sites. Ultrasound helps to fill in the gaps where x-rays are not so useful. It is excellent for looking at softer organs in the body, such as the liver and for pregnancy diagnosis.

Nurse Clinics

At Priory vets we have a team of experienced Veterinary Nurses who are on hand to deliver up-to-date information on all aspects of your pet’s health care. Appointments are available most days at all three sites.

Our qualified Veterinary Nurses are available to provide help on a wide range of subjects such as weight management, diet advice, dental clinics and puppy and kitten care. Our Nurses will clip nails, remove sutures, insert microchips, express anal glands, remove ticks and administer worming and flea treatments.

For any further information, please do not hesitate to contact your local practice to speak to one of our staff.

Home Visits

While we are always able to provide the best care at the practice, we understand there are times when a home visit is more appropriate. This is especially the case when a patient has reached the end and that final difficult decision has been made.

Please try to give us as much notice as possible when requesting a home visit so that we can do our best to provide this. Usually if you can let us know before 9am, we will try to visit that same day. Please be aware that there is an additional charge for a home visit.

If transport is difficult, then we can often arrange for a pet ambulance service for the pet, which involves a non-veterinary surgeon coming to your home to collect the patient and deliver them home later in the day.

Prescriptions

Most medications are prescribed and dispensed at the time of the consultation and after examination by the veterinary surgeon. Current legislation requires us to carry out regular re-examinations to confirm the usefulness of the medication, accuracy of the dose and the absence of side effects. We require medication checks at least every 3 months, according to the judgement of your vet. There is a charge for this re-examination.

For our pets that require ongoing medication, we require 24 hours’ notice to prepare a repeat prescription. This is a service we provide for clients registered with us and for pets, we have seen in the last 3 months, or within the year for flea and worm treatments.

Written prescriptions

We can provide written prescriptions for a modest charge for those clients wishing to source their pet’s medication elsewhere; however, we will still need to see your pet every 3 months. Written prescriptions may not be appropriate if your pet is an in-patient or if treatment is needed immediately.

Medications that we dispense for you do not require a written prescription.

Emergencies

If your pet has an emergency during surgery hours, please telephone the practice immediately and we will ensure that you're offered an appointment on a priority basis. Please make it clear that the matter is not routine and we will do our utmost to attend to you at the earliest opportunity.

Out of hours

Outside of normal hours we offer a 24-hour emergency service. Telephone as normal and you will hear a message explaining we are closed; select the emergency option and you will be diverted to the emergency service contact immediately.

As part of our commitment to our staff’s wellbeing, we do occasionally outsource our out-of-hours care to VetsNow in Hull.  This allows us to provide the highest level of care which we pride ourselves on during normal hours, while still having dedicated vets and nurses available 24/7 all year round.

Should you need to call us outside of normal hours you will receive clinical advice or an urgent appointment as appropriate. Primarily, you will be seen at our Bridlington clinic but occasionally this may be the VetsNow Clinic. They are focused on dealing with pet emergencies, meaning the staff are trained specifically in emergency care. As they do not operate during the day, you can be assured they are up and ready for your pet when needed.  The out-of-hours staff from Priory or VetsNow will provide monitoring and treatment needed, as well as ample TLC vital for any pet’s recovery!

Video Vet consultations can also be arranged.  They can discuss any concerns you have, and advice if your pet does actually need an emergency face to face appointment.

Dental Care

Dental care is as important for our pet as it is for us, bad breath is not normal! Did you know that dental disease can lead to many other problems, including heart, kidney and liver disease?

Sometimes it is necessary to perform dental surgery, either for a scale and polish or extractions. Since two thirds of the teeth lie under the gums, x-rays allow us to see underlying problems and plan the best treatment. Our new dental x-ray machine at the Bridlington Practice gives the best possible standard of care at outstanding value.

Obviously, prevention is better than cure. There are many ways that you can keep your pets’ teeth and gums healthy, including toys and special diets, and most importantly tooth brushing. Our nurses are trained in dental health and can offer you advice during a nurse consultation.

Wellness Screenings for Cats and Dogs

A wellness screening is a comprehensive medical MOT for your cat or dog that can detect health issues and help to give you peace of mind about your pet’s health and wellbeing.
